October, 2000 Attention Provo City School Board, Provo City Mayor and City Council: We, the undersigned residents of Provo, are concerned about the Provo City School Board's commitment to providing quality education for children in the central neighborhoods of the city. By abandoning older schools in traditional neighborhoods and building new schools in the city's suburbs and outer fringes, the board is potentially forcing hundreds of children to be bused out of the central city. The actions of the Board, and other possible actions now under discussion, are counter- intuitive and constitute a serious threat to Provo City's efforts for central neighborhood revitalization. The children of these neighborhoods appear to have become mere pawns in the board's demographic maneuvers to appease political and economic pressure from parents in newer suburbs. We request that the Provo City School Board: 1. Engage central neighborhood residents and city officials in a meaningful dialogue about the future of their schools and their children's future in the Provo School District. 2. Make concerted and creative efforts to educate children in established neighborhood schools. 3. Assure that the central city neighborhoods have direct representation on the School Board, by residents living in the area, including the Hispanic community.
